Choosing the right food for your event

Planning an event involves countless details, but the food is at the heart of it. The quality, service and presentation can make or break the day, and choosing how it is served sets the tone for the entire experience.
You don’t have to limit yourself to one style. Mixing and matching service options gives your guests more choice and keeps the experience lively and engaging.
So, what should you go for — canapés, buffets, bowl food, or a sit‑down meal? The answer depends on your event’s vibe and goals. Is it a relaxed summer wedding, a busy networking event, or a more formal celebration? Think about the guest list, the scale of the occasion, and any dietary requirements. (Whilst JP’s Kitchen is able to cater dietary requirements to any event or food service style, some options may be better suited.)

Buffet

Buffets bring a relaxed, social energy to an event. Guests can help themselves — or be served by staff — from a generous array of dishes. It’s a great fit for larger gatherings where movement and flexibility matter. Buffets do need space for the setup, but they let guests control portion sizes and keep staffing levels low.
Think: fragrant beef massaman curry, beef bourguignon, summer barbecues.

Canapés

Perfect for mingling and networking, canapés let guests sample a variety of bite‑sized flavours while chatting and moving around. They require a bit more staff to circulate and serve but keep energy levels high throughout the event. They’re also a great way to accommodate a range of dietary needs without fuss.
Think: salmon, cream cheese and dill blinis, hoisin duck bites, mini burger sliders.

Bowl Food

Looking for a balance between casual and substantial? Bowl food offers smaller, individual portions — usually two or three per guest — that are satisfying but easy to enjoy while standing or networking. It’s a sociable option without losing the “proper meal” feel and works beautifully for guests with diverse dietary preferences.
Think: lobster and caviar mac and cheese, mini roast dinners.

Sit‑Down Meal

If you’re picturing a more traditional dining experience, a sit‑down meal sets a polished, relaxed tone. Guests can settle in and enjoy restaurant‑style service — perfect for weddings, family gatherings, or team celebrations.
Think: barbecue‑style mains with sharing potatoes and coleslaw, roast lamb with seasonal vegetables.
No matter the occasion, the way you serve your food can shape the atmosphere and leave a lasting impression. Choose the format that best fits your event’s flow, and we’ll make sure it’s delicious, beautifully presented, and perfectly timed.
